How to choose a wall light

A wall light frees up a bedside table, lights a hallway or highlights a wall without taking up floor space. A few guidelines to choose it well and install it in the right place. For the bedroom, our guide to wall lights in the bedroom goes further.

How high should a wall light be installed?

In a living room, hallway or entryway, place it between 1.60 and 1.80 m from the floor, just above eye level to avoid glare. Above a bed, allow 1.20 to 1.50 m from the floor and 15 to 20 cm on each side of the bed. On a staircase, keep the same height above the steps, following the slope.

Hardwired or plug-in wall light?

A hardwired wall light connects to a cable outlet in the wall: the installation is invisible, but it needs an existing light point. Without a wall outlet, choose a model with a cable and plug, or a rechargeable wall light you can fix anywhere, with no work. The type of connection is listed on each product page.

Which wall light for a bathroom?

Near the shower or bath, choose an IP44 model at minimum, protected against water splashes. Above a mirror, a neutral white light (3000 to 4000 K) renders skin tones better. The IP rating of each model is listed on its product page.

Which wall light for outdoors?

A sheltered wall needs at least IP44, a wall exposed to rain rather IP65. For an entrance or a path, a motion sensor avoids leaving the light on. Our outdoor wall lights come in black metal, with slats, with a sensor, or in travertine for a warmer look.

Diffused or directed light?

A wall light that shines up and down, or one with a frosted glass globe, gives soft ambient light, ideal in a living room or hallway. For reading in bed, choose an adjustable head or a shade that directs the light. In a bedroom or living room, a warm 2700 K light remains the most comfortable.
