The right lighting for an entryway is a ceiling light or a compact pendant with the bottom 2.00–2.10 m from the floor, combined with a wall lamp near the mirror at 1.60–1.70 m, all in 3000 K warm white. It is the first light your guests see and the last one you pass as you leave: it must welcome, guide, and flatter. Here is how to choose it based on your ceiling height, entryway size, and layout.

The essentials in 30 seconds

A successful entryway comes down to 5 key points.

  • 1Enough light, but not too much: 100 to 150 lux, or 300 to 450 lumens for a 3 m² entryway.
  • 2Lighting according to ceiling height: ultra-slim ceiling light for under 2.40 m, ceiling light or compact pendant around 2.50 m, chandelier possible from 2.70 m.
  • 3The right size: (length + width in m) × 8 = maximum diameter in cm, i.e., 28 cm for a 2 × 1.5 m entryway.
  • 4The mirror + wall lamp duo: one wall lamp on each side of the mirror, 1.60–1.70 m from the floor.
  • 5Comfort: 3000 K warm white, switch within reach by the door, or a motion sensor.

— 01The 3 missions of entryway lighting

The entryway is the home's storefront. We spend a few seconds there every time, but multiple times a day, often with full hands, sometimes in the dark. Its lighting has three missions:

  • Welcome. It’s the first impression: warm and soft light sets the tone for the entire interior. A dull ceiling light makes the whole house seem cold.
  • Guide. Finding keys, putting shoes away, seeing the threshold: the light must be consistent, without dark corners, and turn on without searching.
  • Reflect. The mirror is for a final glance before heading out. It requires front-facing lighting at eye level, not lighting that falls from the ceiling and creates deep shadows on the features.
  • ① Diffusing ceiling light for general lighting · ② Two wall lamps on either side of the mirror, centered at 1.60–1.70 m from the floor · ③ Lamp on the console table for evening welcome. Example under a 2.50 m ceiling.

Three placements work, depending on the available space:

    • On either side of the mirror: the ideal setup. Two symmetrical wall lamps light the face without shadows. The Néveil globe (Ø 18 cm) or the white glass Élyane sphere are perfect for this.
    • Above the mirror: practical with a large rectangular mirror or when there is limited space on the sides. The Barréil bar, with up-and-down light diffusion, is designed for this use.
    • A single wall lamp on the side: for a narrow entryway. In this case, choose a diffusing model, such as the two-headed Olivéil or the frosted glass Globéil.

Prefer opal, frosted, or woven diffusers: a bare source at eye level causes glare. Aim for a CRI of 90 or more so that your complexion remains natural in the mirror.

    — 05A lamp on the console table: the welcoming touch

This is the detail that distinguishes a "lit" entryway from a welcoming one. A small lamp on the console or shoe cabinet creates low, soft lighting that can be left on in the evening for those returning home.

    • The Liora lamp with its opal globe for diffused, elegant light.
    • The Sérune lamp made of pleated paper (H 47 cm), delivered with its E27 LED bulb.
    • The Solar cordless lamp, rechargeable via USB, for when there is no outlet near the console. Everything you need to know in our guide: rechargeable cordless table lamp.

    — 06Which lighting for an entryway: 4 standard layouts

Every entryway has its own geometry. Here are the four scenarios we see most often, viewed from above, with their corresponding lighting plan.

Plans · 4 entryways, 4 lighting plans2–3 mABCDA. Small entryway: ceiling light + wall lamp by the mirror · B. Hallway entryway: a light point every 2 to 3 m · C. Large entryway: centered chandelier, two wall lamps around the mirror, lamp on the console · D. Open entryway: pendant above the console, living area side in beige.
    A. The small entryway2 × 1.5 m, often an airlock

A slim, diffusing ceiling light of maximum 28 cm, like the Macarélis in the entryway format (≈ 27 cm), and a wall lamp near the mirror. The door takes up much of the space: the ceiling light avoids any risk of collision.

    B. The entryway hallwayLong and narrow

A light point every 2 to 3 m: two small ceiling lights or a series of low-profile wall lamps. This is the hallway logic, detailed in our guide: what lighting for a hallway.

    C. The large entryway3 × 3 m and above

The central fixture becomes a statement piece, up to 48 cm in diameter for 3 × 3 m, or a chandelier if the ceiling reaches 2.70 m. Add two wall lamps around the mirror and a lamp on the console: three sources, three heights.

    D. The open entrywayTo the living room or staircase

Without walls to define the space, the light does it: a pendant above the console marks the zone. Keep the same color temperature as the living room, within 300 K.

The situationSolid door, no window, one light point on the ceiling, and an outlet near the console. Key figures: (2.5 + 2) × 8 = 36 cm maximum diameter; 5 m² × 100–150 lux = 500 to 750 total lumens.

    — 07What light and control for an entryway?

The ideal shade is warm white 3000 K: warm enough to be welcoming, clear enough to judge the colors of an outfit. If the entryway opens into a living room lit at 2700 K, stay within the same family, with a maximum 300 K difference.

3000 KRecommended warm white: welcoming and color-accurate
100–150 luxTarget light level for the entryway, all sources combined
1.60–1.70 mHeight for a wall light near a mirror, above eye level

Regarding controls, the entryway is where comfort is a matter of seconds:

    • The switch near the door, within reach as soon as it opens. If the entryway leads to a hallway or staircase, a two-way switch prevents walking through in the dark.
    • The motion sensor, ideal when your arms are full of groceries or you're carrying a child. It is especially practical in an airlock or entryway hallway.
    • The dimmer, useful if the entryway is open to the living room. Several LED ceiling lights, such as the Macarélis or the Sylvélis, offer adjustable intensity.
    • A night light: a console lamp left on in the evening marks the path and welcomes those returning home late.

    — 086 mistakes to avoid in an entryway

    • ✕A single spotlight in the center: a circle of light on the floor, walls in shadow, and a hollowed face in front of the mirror.
    • ✕A pendant light hung too low: under 2m in a passage, or in the door's swing, collision is inevitable.
    • ✕A light fixture that is too big: beyond the diameter given by the formula, it overwhelms a small entryway.
    • ✕Cool white light: 4000 K and higher create an apartment building lobby effect. Stick to 3000 K.
    • ✕A mirror lit only from above: light falls on the forehead and casts shadows under the eyes.
    • ✕An impossible-to-find switch: if you have to cross the entryway in the dark, install a two-way switch or a sensor.

    — 09Frequently Asked Questions

Which light fixture for an entryway?+

A ceiling light or a compact pendant for general lighting, with a clearance of 2.00–2.10m from the floor in the walkway, plus a wall light near the mirror at 1.60–1.70m. With ceilings under 2.40m, choose an ultra-flat ceiling light; from 2.70m, a chandelier becomes possible.

What size ceiling light for a small entryway?+

Apply the formula (length + width in m) × 8 to get the maximum diameter in cm. An entryway of 2 × 1.5m can handle up to 28cm, an entryway of 2.5 × 2m up to 36cm. A flat, diffusing ceiling light can be slightly smaller.

At what height should I place a wall light in an entryway?+

Near the mirror, place the wall light 1.60–1.70m from the floor, ideally one on each side. Elsewhere in the entryway, an ambient wall light should be fixed between 1.60 and 1.80m, above eye level so as not to glare.

Pendant or ceiling light in an entryway?+

Under 2.40m, a ceiling light is best. Around 2.50m, a compact pendant remains possible if the total cable + light assembly does not exceed 40 to 50 cm and does not obstruct the door. From 2.70m, a generous pendant or chandelier enhances the entryway.

How many lumens for an entryway?+

Aim for 100 to 150 lux and multiply by the area. A 4 m² entryway requires 400 to 600 total lumens; an 8 m² entryway, 800 to 1,200 lumens, spread between the ceiling light, wall lights, and lamps.

Which light color to choose for an entryway?+

A 3000 K warm white: welcoming, yet clear enough to see colors well. If the entryway is open to a 2700 K living room, keep a maximum 300 K difference between the two to avoid a patchwork effect.
