The right pendant light for a rectangular table depends primarily on its length: up to 160 cm, a single large pendant, ideally oval, may suffice; from 140 to 180 cm, two identical pendants; beyond that, three pendants in a row or a linear fixture. In any case, the light should cover one-half to two-thirds of the table. Here are the 4 configurations, shown from a top-down view, and how to install them even if your ceiling outlet is poorly positioned.
A rectangular table, 4 winning configurations.
- 1Up to 160 cm: a single pendant about half the width of the table (Ø 45 to 50 cm for a 140 × 90 cm table).
- 2From 140 to 180 cm: two identical pendants, separated by a gap at least equal to their diameter.
- 3180 cm and more: three pendants in a row (Ø 25 to 40 cm) or a linear fixture 100 to 160 cm long.
- 4Lit length: one-half to two-thirds of the table, i.e., 90 to 120 cm for a 180 cm table.
- 5Poorly placed light outlet: a swag hook or a long mounting plate recenters the light without heavy work.
— 013 benchmarks for a pendant light over a rectangular table
A rectangular table has two dimensions, and each dictates a different setting. The width determines the size of the lights; the length determines their number. Three benchmarks are enough to validate any configuration.
How do you measure "lit length"? For a linear fixture, it is simply its length. For a series, take the distance between the center of the first pendant and the center of the last. On a 180 cm table, this must fall between 90 and 120 cm: the two outermost pendants will then be 30 to 45 cm from each end of the table, and the light will never spill onto the floor.
The height does not change with the shape: 60 to 80 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixtures, 75 cm as a baseline, identical for the entire series. Fine adjustments are covered in what height for a pendant light above a table, and the complete calculation method for sizes in what size pendant light above a table.
— 02The 4 configurations that work
A 160 × 90 cm table, a very common format for 6 to 8 diners, accommodates all four configurations. It is the ideal example to compare their effect at actual size.
For other lengths, here are the sizes that work in each configuration (a dash indicates an unsuitable configuration).
| Table | 1 pendant | 2 pendants | 3 pendants | Linear |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120 × 80 cm · 4 diners | Ø 35–45 cm | 2 × Ø 20–25 cm | — | 60–80 cm |
| 140 × 90 cm · 6 diners | Ø 45–50 cm | 2 × Ø 25–35 cm | — | 70–90 cm |
| 160 × 90 cm · 6–8 diners | Ø 50–60 cm, oval ideal | 2 × Ø 30–40 cm | 3 × Ø 20–25 cm | 80–110 cm |
| 180 × 90/100 cm · 8 diners | — (too short) | 2 × Ø 40 cm | 3 × Ø 25–35 cm | 100–120 cm |
| 200–240 cm · 8–10 diners | — | — | 3 × Ø 30–40 cm | 120–160 cm |
Each table size is detailed, with corresponding models, in our article what pendant diameter for a 120, 140, 160, or 180 cm table.
— 03The single large pendant
For whom: tables from 120 to 160 cm and interiors that favor bold statement pieces. A single generous fixture creates an immediate focal point from one light source.
The right size: about half the width, without exceeding the width minus 30 cm so that no one bumps their head when standing up.
Round or oval? On a short table, a round pendant works very well. From 160 cm, an oval shape is ideal: it stretches along the table and illuminates the ends better. The Orvella oval chandelier, 70 cm long, perfectly dresses a 120 to 140 cm table.
- 120 × 80 cm table: Olivora (Ø 40 cm disc) or Velmora in Ø 40 cm.
- 140 × 90 cm table: Calora in Ø 45 cm or Nuvora in Ø 50 cm.
- 160 × 90 cm table: Calora in Ø 58 cm, Velmora, or Pruméa in Ø 60 cm.
Its limit: starting at 180 cm, a single pendant leaves both ends in the shadows. This is the moment to switch to two or three lights.
— 04The duo of identical pendants
For whom: tables from 140 to 180 cm. Two twin fixtures distribute light along the entire length and provide a soothing symmetry, highly appreciated in contemporary dining rooms.
The right size: 2 × Ø 25 to 35 cm on a 140 cm table, 2 × Ø 30 to 40 cm on a 160 cm table, 2 × Ø 40 cm on a 180 cm table. The longer the table, the larger each pendant can be, but without exceeding half the width.
Placement: center the pair on the table, then move the two pendants apart so that their centers cover one-half to two-thirds of the length. On 140 cm, this gives 70 to 90 cm center-to-center; on 160 cm, 80 to 105 cm. Finally, verify that there remains a space between the two lights at least equal to their diameter.
— 05The trio of pendants in a row
For whom: tables of 160 cm and larger, especially from 180 to 240 cm. The odd number creates a strong central focus and a regular rhythm: it is the most versatile configuration for large dining sets.
The right size: 3 × Ø 20 to 25 cm on 160 cm, 3 × Ø 25 to 35 cm on 180 cm, 3 × Ø 30 to 40 cm on a 200 to 240 cm table.
3-step calculation: ① determine the lit length (half to two-thirds of the table, here 120 cm), ② divide by two to get the center-to-center spacing (60 cm), ③ subtract the diameter of the fixtures to get the clear space between them, which must remain at least equal to that diameter. With Ø 25 cm lights, 35 cm remains: it is validated.

— 06The linear fixture or elongated chandelier
For whom: all rectangular tables, from the shortest to the longest, and anyone who prefers a pure line to a succession of fixtures. One object, usually one electrical outlet, continuous light from one end of the table to the other.
The right length: one-half to two-thirds of the table. Concretely: 60 to 80 cm for 120 cm, 70 to 90 cm for 140 cm, 80 to 110 cm for 160 cm, 100 to 120 cm for 180 cm, and 120 to 160 cm for a 200 to 240 cm table.
- The Sylvara branch chandelier is available in L 100, 120, 140, and 160 cm, at 45 cm high, with an adjustable height up to 120 cm: L 100 for a 160 cm table, L 120 for 180 cm, L 140 or L 160 for a 200 to 240 cm table.
- The Orvella oval chandelier, 70 cm oval but only 7.6 cm thick, with integrated LED and remote control: the solution for a 120 to 140 cm table, even under a low ceiling.
— 07Off-center light outlet: long mounting plate and swag hook
A very common situation: the electrical outlet is in the center of the room but the table is offset, or you want three pendants with only one ceiling outlet. Two solutions avoid having to damage the ceiling.
The swag hook: the simple solution
The cable runs from the electrical outlet, across the ceiling to a hook screwed directly above the center of the table, then down to the fixture. Ensure the cable is long enough to cover the offset in addition to the pendant height: its curve even becomes a decorative detail.
The long mounting plate: for aligning several pendants
An elongated plate is fixed to the ceiling over the existing outlet; the pendant cables descend at regular intervals. A single electrical feed thus powers two or three fixtures, and the plate can be slightly offset to recenter the composition over the table. Choose one at least as long as the desired light line: 120 cm of line means a 120 cm plate at minimum.

— 09Mistakes that unbalance a rectangular table
- ✕Stretching the line to the ends. Beyond two-thirds of the table, the outermost lights illuminate the floor and chairs rather than the plates.
- ✕Crowding the pendants. If the space between two light fixtures is less than their diameter, the series reads as a confusing mass.
- ✕A small isolated pendant on a large table. A Ø 30 cm light in the center of a 200 cm table creates a pool of light and two dark table ends.
- ✕Aligning with the room. The series follows the axis of the table, even if it is not parallel to the wall or centered in the room.
- ✕Approximate heights. In an aligned series, a gap of a few centimeters is immediately visible. Adjust each pendant by measuring from the tabletop, not from the ceiling, which is never perfectly level.

— 10Frequently Asked Questions
Which pendant light for a 180 cm rectangular table?+
A single pendant is too short for 180 cm. Choose three pendants of Ø 25 to 35 cm, two pendants of Ø 40 cm, or a linear fixture of 100 to 120 cm. The light should cover 90 to 120 cm of the length, centered over the table.
How many pendants above a rectangular table?+
Only one up to 140 cm, or even 160 cm with an oval model; two for a table 140 to 180 cm; three for a table 180 cm and over. An odd number provides the most balanced look on a large table.
What spacing between two pendants above a table?+
The free space between two fixtures should be at least equal to their diameter, meaning about 60 to 80 cm from center to center for Ø 25 to 35 cm pendants, with the line covering half to two-thirds of the table.
Is a single pendant enough for a rectangular table?+
Yes, up to 140 cm, and up to 160 cm with an oval or elongated pendant of Ø 50 to 60 cm. Beyond that, a single pendant leaves the ends of the table in the shadows.
How do I install several pendants with a single light point?+
With a long canopy, fixed over the existing electrical outlet: the pendants descend at regular intervals. Another solution is a linear fixture or a triple pendant, which connect to a single point.
At what height should pendants be placed over a rectangular table?+
Between 60 and 80 cm above the tabletop, with 75 cm as a reference, and all at the same height in an aligned series. Raise large opaque models slightly, lower small diffusing models.
