The best light fixture above a dining table is almost always a pendant: a single one, about half the width of the table, for a round or square table; two or three in a row, or a linear fixture, for a rectangular table; a chandelier for a large table under a generous ceiling. In all cases, the bottom of the fixture should be set at approximately 75 cm from the tabletop. Here is how to decide, followed by the 5 settings to check.
The right table light comes down to 5 decisions.
- 1Round or square table: a single pendant 40–60% of the table's diameter (Ø 50 to 65 cm for a 120 cm round table).
- 2Rectangular table: 2 pendants for 140 to 180 cm, 3 for larger sizes, or a linear fixture half to two-thirds the length of the table.
- 3Height: 60 to 80 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture, using 75 cm as a reference.
- 4Light: warm white 3000 K (2700 K for dimmer dinners), CRI ≥ 90 and a dimmer.
- 5Ceiling: at 2.50 m, an adjustable cable is enough; beyond 3 m, plan for a 1.5 to 2 m cable to maintain the 75 cm distance.
— 01Which light fixture above a dining table? The 4 options
The fixture hovering above the table has two missions: to illuminate the plates and faces, and to set the tone for the entire room. Four categories fulfill this role, each with its preferred setting.
1. The single pendant: the obvious choice for a round or square table
A single, centered light fixture that draws a circle of light on the table. This is the simplest solution to install and the most visually impactful, provided you aim for about half the width or diameter of the table. It is suitable for round, square, and rectangular tables seating 4 to 6. From 180 cm long onwards, a single fixture leaves the ends in the shadows.
2. The series of pendants: rhythm for long tables
Two or three identical light fixtures, aligned along the axis of the table: the light is distributed from one end to the other, and the composition creates a very architectural rhythm. Two pendants dress a 140 to 180 cm table; three, in an odd number, balance a large table. Leave a space between two fixtures that is at least equal to their diameter.
3. The linear fixture or elongated chandelier: a single line of light
A bar, a crystal branch, or an oval that echoes the rectangular table. This is the most elegant option for a long table, and often the most practical, as it generally connects to a single light point. Its length: half to two-thirds of the table, i.e., 80 to 110 cm for a 160 cm table.
4. The chandelier: the centerpiece
Candles, crystal, light branches: the chandelier transforms dinner into an event. It shines best under a ceiling of at least 2.70 m, above a large table; at 2.50 m, choose a flat model. It is adjusted like a pendant: its lowest point should remain about 75 cm from the tabletop.
— 02Which light fixture above a dining table based on its shape?
The shape of the table almost always decides the option: the circle calls for the circle, the line calls for the line. The number of place settings provides the order of magnitude.
| Table | Seats | Recommended option | Size reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round Ø 90 cm | 4 | Single pendant | Ø 35–45 cm |
| Round Ø 120 cm | 6 | Single pendant or cluster | Ø 50–65 cm, or cluster 3 × Ø 20–25 cm |
| Round Ø 140–150 cm | 6–8 | Large pendant, chandelier or cluster | Ø 60–80 cm, or cluster of 3 to 5 |
| Rect. 120 × 80 cm | 4 | Single pendant | Ø 35–45 cm |
| Rect. 140 × 90 cm | 6 | 1 pendant, 2 in a series or one oval | Ø 45–50 cm · 2 × Ø 25–35 cm · L 70–90 cm |
| Rect. 160 × 90 cm | 6–8 | 2 or 3 in a series, or linear | 2 × Ø 30–40 · 3 × Ø 20–25 · L 80–110 cm |
| Rect. 180 × 90/100 cm | 8 | 3 in a series, or linear | 3 × Ø 25–35 · 2 × Ø 40 · L 100–120 cm |
| Rect. 200–240 cm | 8–10 | 3 in a series, or linear | 3 × Ø 30–40 cm · L 120–160 cm |
Round or square table. A single, centered pendant with a diameter between 40 and 60% of the table's diameter (a square table is treated like a round table of the same width). Globe, dome, disk, or wreath: all shapes are in our guide which pendant for a round table.
Rectangular table. Up to 140 cm, a nice single pendant is still sufficient; beyond that, align two or three pendants, or opt for a linear fixture. The four configurations, with their dimensioned diagrams: which pendant for a rectangular table.
Oval table. An oval chandelier or a linear light fixture perfectly follows its contour; a round pendant is only suitable for small 4-seat ovals.
For configurations calculated size by size, with corresponding models, consult what pendant diameter for a 120, 140, 160, or 180 cm table.
— 03Based on ceiling height
Above a table, no one walks standing up: the pendant can hang much lower than in a passageway. What changes from one ceiling to another is the cable length and the fixture's silhouette.
Low ceiling (less than 2.40 m)
The table is one of the few places where a pendant remains possible under a low ceiling. Choose a low-profile silhouette: the Orvella oval chandelier is only 7.6 cm thick, the Pruméa chandelier is 24 cm high. For the rest of the room: which light fixture for a low ceiling.
Standard ceiling (2.50 m)
Above the table, the pendant can hang down to about 1 m below the ceiling: this is your cable + fixture "budget," and an adjustable cable is essential to get it right. Compatible silhouettes: which pendant for a 2.50 m ceiling.
High ceilings (over 3 m)
The volume allows for a more imposing fixture, up to 20 to 25% of the ceiling height for a central chandelier. But the 75 cm above the table does not change: plan for a 1.5 to 2 m cable and 20 to 30% more lumens. Our advice: which light fixture for high ceilings.
— 04Based on your dining room style
Material creates the atmosphere, with a very concrete effect: an opaque material concentrates light on the tabletop, while a diffusing material also illuminates faces.
Filtered light, soft shadows on the tablecloth: the Calora pendant, the Doréa triple pendant and the NATURA collection.
Sculptural volumes that direct light toward the table, in a series or dome: travertine pendants.
Colorful disks for a 4-seat table: the Olivora pendant (Ø 40 cm) and the SVALA collection.
The Sylvara golden branch chandelier for a long table, the Lucerna frosted glass candle chandelier and the AURELIS collection.
— 05The 5 key settings, in summary
Adjusting the fixture is what makes a table welcoming. The five points to check, with the detailed guide for each:
-
1Height. 60 to 80 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture, 75 cm as a reference: a little higher for a large opaque model, a little lower for a small diffusing model. Seated, you see your guests under the light fixture. Detail: what height for a pendant above a table.
-
2Diameter. About half the width of the table, keeping at least 15 cm (ideally 30 cm) between the edge of the fixture and the edge of the table. The complete method: what size pendant above a table.
-
3Number. One fixture for a round, square, or short table; two for 140 to 180 cm; three for a large table. Space two pendants by at least their diameter, i.e., about 60 to 80 cm from center to center for Ø 25 to 35 cm models.
-
4Light. 200 to 300 lux on the table, in warm white 3000 K, CRI of at least 90 for true-to-life dish colors, and a dimmer to transition from lunch to dim dinner. To calculate lumens: what wattage for a dining room fixture.
-
5Cable and canopy. An adjustable cable handles height; an offset hook or a long canopy handles an off-center light point and allows multiple pendants to be powered from a single ceiling outlet.

— 07Mistakes to avoid and the final checklist
- ✕Centering on the room instead of the table. Offset the pendant light with an offset hook rather than moving the table.
- ✕Choosing too small. The number one mistake: a 30 cm pendant light over a 180 cm table looks lost and leaves the ends of the table in the shadows.
- ✕Hanging too high or too low. Close to the ceiling, the "pool of light" effect disappears; below 60 cm, the light fixture blocks views and causes glare.
- ✕Cold light. Neutral white (4000 K) makes dishes look dull and faces tired: stay at 3000 K, or 2700 K for more intimacy.
- ✕Forgetting the dimmer. The same table is used for breakfast, homework, and candlelit dinners.
- ✓I measured the table and the ceiling height, and located the light point.
- ✓The diameter or length falls within the range in the table above.
- ✓The cable allows the bottom of the light fixture to be placed about 75 cm from the tabletop.
- ✓My bulbs are 3000 K, CRI ≥ 90, and dimmable if I install a dimmer switch.
The table is only one part of the room: to accompany it with wall lamps, a lamp on the sideboard, or a floor lamp, follow our guide on which light fixture for a dining room.
— 08Frequently Asked Questions
Which light fixture should be placed over a dining table?+
A pendant light in the vast majority of cases: a single one for a round, square, or short table; two or three aligned, or a linear fixture, for a rectangular table over 140 cm long; a chandelier for a large table under a high ceiling. The bottom of the fixture is placed about 75 cm from the tabletop.
At what height should a light fixture be hung over a table?+
Between 60 and 80 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture, with 75 cm as the ideal reference. With a standard table 75 cm high, the bottom of the light fixture is therefore about 1.40 to 1.55 m from the floor. Raise a large opaque model slightly, lower a small diffusing model.
What size pendant light for a 6-person table?+
For a round table of 120 cm, a pendant light of Ø 50 to 65 cm. For a rectangular table of 140 × 90 cm, a pendant light of Ø 45 to 50 cm, two pendant lights of Ø 25 to 35 cm, or an oval fixture 70 to 90 cm long.
How many pendant lights over a rectangular table?+
Only one up to about 140 cm, two for a table 140 to 180 cm long, three for a large table 180 cm and over. The assembly should occupy half to two-thirds of the length, with a space between two fixtures at least equal to their diameter.
What if the light point is not over the table?+
Use an offset hook: the cable starts from the light point, goes through a hook attached vertically to the center of the table, then goes down to the light fixture. A long mounting plate also allows several pendant lights to be aligned from a single electrical outlet.
