The best pendant light for a round table is a single, centered, circular-shaped pendant, with a diameter that is 40 to 60% of the table's diameter: Ø 35 to 45 cm for a 90 cm table, Ø 50 to 65 cm for 120 cm, Ø 60 to 80 cm for 150 cm. Hanging about 75 cm above the tabletop, it gathers all guests within the same circle of light. Globe, dome, disc, ring, cluster, or chandelier: here is how to choose the shape, size, and material.

The essentials in 30 seconds

The round table, the easiest to light well.

  • 1A single, centered pendant: a round table has only one center, and that is where the light must fall.
  • 2Diameter = 40 to 60% of the table, with half being the ideal benchmark (Ø 60 cm for a 120 cm table).
  • 3A circular shape: globe, dome, disc, ring; or a cluster of 3 to 5 globes for a large table.
  • 4Height: 60 to 80 cm above the tabletop, 75 cm as a benchmark; 65–70 cm for a small diffusing model.
  • 5Oval or extendable table: base dimensions on the width and center over the most used position.

— 01The circle calls for a circle

Around a round table, every guest is at the same distance from the center. A single light source placed directly over this center therefore lights all faces in the same way, with no disadvantaged seat at the ends of the table. This is what makes a round table so convivial, and so simple to light.

The shape of the luminaire extends this logic. A circular pendant repeats the design of the tabletop and creates a column of light that defines the dining area, even in an open-plan room. Conversely, a linear luminaire above a round table breaks the symmetry and lights two guests better than the others.

One round table, one center, one light: the simplest rule in lighting design.

— 02Which pendant diameter for a round table?

The benchmark: a luminaire diameter equal to about half the diameter of the table, in a range of 40 to 60%. A second rule acts as a safeguard: keep at least 15 cm, ideally 30 cm, between the edge of the luminaire and the edge of the table, so no one bumps their head when standing up.

Ø 140–150 cm 6–8 Ø 60–80 cm 3 to 5 globes

Low or high end of the range? Stay around 40–50% with a solid, opaque model, or under a low ceiling; move toward 55–60% with a light, openwork, or glass model, which appears less imposing at the same size. The complete reasoning, with the tip to visualize the size before buying, is in our method what size pendant above a table. And for all table sizes, round or rectangular: what pendant diameter for a table of 120, 140, 160, or 180 cm.

— 036 pendant shapes for a round table

All circular shapes work, but they do not diffuse the same light. This criterion, even more than the style, should guide your choice.

Diagram · The 6 shapes that complement the circleGlobeDômeDisqueCouronneGrappeLustreThe globe and cluster diffuse in all directions · The dome and disc focus the light on the table · The ring and chandelier combine decorative brilliance and ambient light.

The globe: enveloping light

A sphere diffuses at 360°: it lights the table, faces, and ceiling for a soft, shadow-free atmosphere. In paper, like the Sérora globe pendant (6 diameters from 20 to 70 cm), or braided, like the Tresséa, which casts lovely shadows. A small diffusing globe is best hung at the lower end of the range, about 65–70 cm from the tabletop.

The dome: directed light

The dome concentrates light downwards, onto the plates, and leaves the rest of the room in shadow: this is the "bistro" effect that isolates the table. The travertine dome of the Travéaube pendant is perfect for a 4-seater dining nook. A large, opaque dome is best hung at about 75–80 cm.

The disc: graphic and compact

Flat, it lights downward while remaining very low-profile, ideal under a 2.50m ceiling. The disc of the Olivora pendant (Ø 40 cm) is tailored for a 90 cm round table, and the layered discs of the Solora add a retro Scandinavian touch.

The ring: airy elegance

A luminous ring repeats the circle of the table with great lightness, as the center remains empty. The Velaria chandelier comes in a Ø 36 cm ring, a Ø 55 cm ring, or a double ring: Ø 36 cm for a 90 cm table, Ø 55 cm for a 120 cm table.

The cluster: for large tables

Several globes at different heights, gathered above the center. On a 120 cm table, count on 3 luminaires of Ø 20 to 25 cm; on a 140 to 150 cm table, a cluster of 3 to 5. The glass balls of the Bulléa pendant (Ø 10 to 30 cm) or the amber glass of the Mélora are perfectly suited for this. The lowest globe respects the same height as a single pendant.

The chandelier: the reception table

Candles, globes, or crystals, the chandelier stands out on a large round table under a generous ceiling. The Lucerna candle chandelier, the Auréora 6-globe opaline pendant, or the Pruméa crystal chandelier (Ø 40 to 100 cm, only 24 cm high) give the table a festive character.

— 04Properly centering and adjusting height

On a round table, a shift of a few centimeters is immediately noticeable, as the pendant is alone and everyone is looking at it. Four steps for a perfect result.

  1. 1
Place the table first, permanently, taking into account walkways and chair clearance. It determines the suspension point, not the center of the room.
  2. 2
Locate the center of the tabletop by measuring two perpendicular diameters, then mark it on the ceiling with a plumb line or laser level.
  3. 3
Correct any offset from the electrical point if necessary: an offset hook fixed directly above the center is sufficient. The two recentering solutions are illustrated in our article which pendant for a rectangular table.
  4. 4
Adjust the height from the tabletop: 60 to 80 cm, 75 cm as a benchmark, meaning the bottom of the luminaire is about 1.40 to 1.55 m from the floor for a standard table. Details on adjustments according to the model and ceiling: what height for a pendant above a table.
✦
The AMBIENT HOME tipSit down before cutting or locking the cable. You should see the face of the person opposite you under the luminaire, not the luminaire right in the middle of your line of sight. Test this with two people of different heights.

— 05Oval or extendable table: the right habits

The extendable table poses a simple question: which configuration should you light for? Size the pendant for the table closed, the one you use daily, but aim for the higher end of the range. When the table is opened to entertain, the light remains centered, and you simply extend the light toward the ends with two cordless lamps.

Top view · Extendable round table12① Table closed Ø 120 cm: a Ø 60 cm pendant, centered · ② Table open with its leaf (dark area): the pendant remains in the center, two cordless lamps extend the light toward the ends.

For those evenings, the Solar cordless lamp (USB rechargeable, 9 brightness levels) or the battery-powered Fuméa mushroom lamp sit directly on the table, with no cables at all.

The oval table is sized based on its width, like a rectangular table of the same length. A small 4-seater oval table can accept a single round pendant; beyond that, an oval chandelier like the Orvella (70 cm long) follows the contour of the tabletop better.

— 06Which material fits your style?

The material determines the quality of the light as much as the style. Around a round table, where people face each other, prioritize materials that soften the light on faces.

Our recommendation
  • Brisora in Ø 80 cm, cable up to 200 cm
  • Or Lucéa chandelier in Ø 72 cm, 45 LED lights
  • Or a cluster of 3 to 5 Bulléa globes

— 08Mistakes to avoid above a round table

  • ✕A pendant that is too small. A Ø 30 cm fixture above a 150 cm table looks like a forgotten lightbulb. Stay in the 40 to 60% range.
  • ✕A pendant that is too wide. Beyond 60%, the light fixture overhangs the guests, who may bump into it when standing up.
  • ✕Slightly off-center. On a round table, this is very noticeable. Center it with a plumb line.
  • ✕A linear light fixture. It lights two spots better than the others and breaks the harmony of the circle.
  • ✕A bare bulb at eye level. With an open model, choose a soft bulb in warm white 3000 K, or 2700 K for intimate dinners, with a CRI of at least 90.

— 09Frequently asked questions

What size pendant light for a 120 cm round table?+

A pendant of Ø 50 to 65 cm, which is 40 to 60% of the table's diameter. A Ø 60 cm model leaves a 30 cm margin on each side, the ideal balance. You can also opt for a cluster of 3 light fixtures of Ø 20 to 25 cm.

What pendant light for a 4-person round table?+

For 4 place settings around a 90 cm round table, choose a single pendant of Ø 35 to 45 cm, such as a 40 cm disc or a 36 cm ring. For a 100 to 110 cm table, increase to Ø 45 to 55 cm.

One or multiple pendants above a round table?+

A single pendant, centered, in the vast majority of cases. For a table of 120 cm or more, a cluster of 3 to 5 globes grouped above the center is a beautiful alternative. Avoid multiple aligned pendants, which are reserved for rectangular tables.

At what height should a light fixture be suspended above a round table?+

Between 60 and 80 cm above the tabletop, with 75 cm as a benchmark. Lower to 65–70 cm for a small diffusing paper or opal globe, raise to 75–80 cm for a large opaque model.

What pendant light for an extendable round table?+

Size the pendant for the table when closed, aiming for the top of the 40 to 60% range, and center it on that position. When the table is open, supplement with one or two cordless lamps placed toward the ends.

What shape of pendant light for a round table?+

A circular shape: a globe for enveloping light, a dome or disc for light directed toward the table, a crown for lightness, or a cluster or chandelier for a large table. The circle of the light fixture complements the circle of the tabletop.
