Under a 2.50 m ceiling, a pendant light should occupy a maximum of 40 to 50 cm, cable included, anywhere people walk, in order to maintain 2.00 to 2.10 m of clear passage; above a table, however, it can hang down to about 1 m below the ceiling. Compact heights and adjustable cables are the two keys. Here is the calculation, room by room, and the models suitable for a 2.50 m ceiling.
2.50 m ceiling: it all comes down to 40 cm.
- 1Height budget in walking areas: 2.50 − 2.10 = 40 cm for the cable, canopy, and fixture (50 cm maximum, tolerating a 2.00 m clearance).
- 2Above a table: bottom of the light 60–80 cm from the tabletop, i.e., around 1.50 m from the floor and about 1 m below the ceiling.
- 3Above an island: 75 to 90 cm above the worktop, i.e., bottom around 1.65–1.80 m from the floor.
- 4Compact shapes: disc, dome, cloud, flat chandelier like the Pruméa (24 cm high) or the Orvella (7.6 cm thick).
- 5Adjustable cable essential: the same pendant must be able to occupy 40 cm or 1 m depending on where it is hung.
— 01Pendant light and 2.50 m ceiling: the "height budget" calculation
2.50 m is the most common ceiling height in French homes. Enough for a pendant, but not for just any one. It all starts with a simple reference point: where you walk while standing, keep at least 2.00 m, ideally 2.10 m, between the floor and the bottom of the light.
The difference between the ceiling height and this free passage is your height budget: the space available for the canopy, cable, and the light fixture itself.
- Comfort: 2.50 m − 2.10 m = 40 cm.
- Maximum: 2.50 m − 2.00 m = 50 cm, reserved for areas with little traffic.
Above a table or an island, no one walks under the fixture: the budget changes completely, as shown in the cross-section below.
— 02In walking areas: which pendant fits within 40 cm?
In the center of a living room, bedroom, or entryway, the pendant is in your path. It must therefore fit within the 40 cm budget, cable and canopy included. Concretely, this excludes large spheres, elongated cones, and chandeliers with arms, favoring wide but low-profile fixtures.
The calculation is always the same: budget − height of the fixture = length of cable and canopy available. With a 40 cm budget, a fixture 20 to 25 cm high still leaves about fifteen centimeters of cable, which is enough to keep it nicely away from the ceiling. Beyond 30 cm in height, it ends up flush with the ceiling or hangs down into the passage.
If your ceiling is even lower, this budget vanishes very quickly: at 2.30 m, only 20 cm remain, and the ultra-flat ceiling light becomes the rule. We detail these situations in our guide which light fixture for a low ceiling.
— 03Above a table: hanging down to 1 m below the ceiling
Above a dining table, the rules of logic change: we are no longer trying to keep the passage clear, but to place the light at the right level for the meal. The reference is 60 to 80 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture, ideally 75 cm. With a standard 75 cm high table, the bottom of the pendant sits around 1.40–1.55 m from the floor, or about 1 m below a 2.50 m ceiling.
- Wide or opaque fixture: stay at the top of the range (75–80 cm from the tabletop).
- Small diffusing fixture (opal glass, paper): go down to 65–70 cm.
- Diameter: about half the width of the table, keeping at least 15 cm (ideally 30 cm) between the edge of the light and the edge of the table.
Good news: under 2.50 m, the table is the place where you can indulge in a more generous piece, such as the Brisora wooden slat pendant (Ø 40, 60 or 80 cm, cable up to 200 cm) or the Velmora resin pendant, available in five diameters from 30 to 80 cm. All the fine adjustments (opacity, multiple pendants, extendable table) are in our article what height for a pendant above a table.
— 04The adjustable cable: the essential ally for 2.50 m ceilings
With 40 cm on one side and 1 m on the other, the same pendant may need to occupy very different heights depending on where the light point is located. Hence the importance of a cable that is long enough and adjustable. Always check the maximum length indicated on the product page: 120 cm for the Nuvéa pendant, 140 cm for the Olivora, 150 cm for the Sombora, 170 cm for the Travéhalo.
-
1Measure your actual ceiling height, at the exact location of the light point: "theoretical" height sometimes loses a few centimeters once the floor is installed.
-
2Set the height of the bottom of the fixture according to the zone: 2.10 m in passageways, about 1.50 m above a table, 1.65 to 1.80 m above an island.
-
3Calculate the cable: ceiling height − bottom height − fixture height. Example with a Pruméa chandelier (24 cm) above a table: 2.50 − 1.50 − 0.24 = 0.76 m of cable and canopy.
-
4Adjust, then check while seated and standing before fixing permanently: a few centimeters change everything under a standard ceiling.
— 05Compact shapes that have character
Compact in height does not mean small or boring. Under 2.50 m, favor wide and low silhouettes: they diffuse light well, provide structure to the room, and leave air above heads.
- The flat chandelier: the Pruméa K9 crystal chandelier is only 24 cm high, from Ø 40 to Ø 100 cm; the Orvella oval chandelier, 70 cm long, is only 7.6 cm thick. The sparkle of a chandelier, without the bulk.
- The cloud: the Nuvéa silk pendant (Ø 40 × H 20 or Ø 50 × H 23 cm) is suitable for rooms of 8 to 15 m² and 2.50 m ceilings.
- The disc and the dome: the Olivora, a flat 40 cm disc with a retro Scandinavian look, or the Sombora, a 30 cm dome that directs light downward.
- The slim LED pendant: the Verdora in smoked glass, Ø 25 or 35 cm for only 11 cm high.
Conversely, reserve classic arm chandeliers, large spheres, and cascade pendants for ceilings of 2.70 m and higher: under 2.50 m, they only find their place above a table.

The living room
A central compact pendant is rarely enough to light an entire living room: supplement it with a floor lamp and wall lights, using the three-layer method detailed in our guide which light fixture for a living room. In a small room, offsetting the pendant above the sofa corner is often wiser than centering it: our ideas are in which pendant for a small living room.
The bedroom and entryway
In the bedroom, a 30 cm Sérora paper sphere hung with 10 cm of cable fits exactly within the 40 cm. In the entryway, check that the door opens without hitting the light: the Ombrelia rattan pendant (Ø 30 cm) is a good format.

— 08Common mistakes under 2.50 m
- ✕Reasoning without the cable. A 35 cm fixture "fits" within 40 cm... until you add the base and the cable. Always count the whole thing.
- ✕Not adjusting the cable. In the center of a 2.50 m living room, a pendant hanging a few centimeters too low becomes an obstacle.
- ✕Leaving the pendant at 2.10 m above the table. Too high: the light disperses and the fixture floats far from the meal. Lower it to 60–80 cm from the tabletop.
- ✕Choosing a large sphere in the center of the room. A 50 cm sphere is 50 cm high: it exceeds the budget on its own.
- ✕Forgetting the entry door. In an entryway, the lighting must remain above the door's opening arc.
— 09Frequently Asked Questions
Which pendant light should I choose for a 2.50m ceiling?+
In a walkway, a wide and low-profile pendant where the total dimensions, including the cable, do not exceed 40 cm (50 cm at most): disc, dome, cloud, or flat chandelier. Above a table, you can choose a more generous piece, which can hang down to about 1 m below the ceiling.
At what height should a pendant be hung under a 2.50m ceiling?+
In a walkway, the bottom of the fixture must remain 2.10 m from the floor (2.00 m at minimum). Above a table, place it 60–80 cm from the tabletop, or about 1.50 m from the floor. Above an island, count on 75 to 90 cm above the countertop.
What cable length should I plan for a 2.50m ceiling?+
Calculate: ceiling height − height of the bottom of the light − height of the light fixture. Above a table, this is often 70 to 90 cm; in a walkway, 15 to 30 cm is sufficient. Choose a model with an adjustable cable to calibrate during installation.
Can I use a chandelier with a 2.50m ceiling?+
Yes, if it is flat or placed above a table. A flat chandelier like the Pruméa (24 cm high) or the Orvella (7.6 cm thick) fits within the 40 cm budget. Classic branched chandeliers generally require 2.70 m and up.
Pendant or ceiling light under a 2.50m ceiling?+
Both work. A pendant adds more character, provided it remains compact in walkways. The ceiling light remains the simplest choice in a hallway or a high-traffic room, and becomes essential under 2.40 m.
What size pendant for a table under a 2.50m ceiling?+
The diameter depends on the table, not the ceiling: about half its width, with 15 to 30 cm of margin on each side. For a 140 × 90 cm table, aim for 45 to 50 cm. The 2.50 m ceiling only requires adjusting the cable.
