A beautiful living room isn't about a single light fixture, but a well-balanced combination of lights. Whether it's a pendant, ceiling light, floor lamp, wall sconce, or table lamp: here is how to choose the right models, in the right size and for the right spot, for a living room that is both functional and cozy.
The right living room lighting follows 5 rules.
- 1Layer 3 levels: ambient lighting (pendant or ceiling light), task lighting (reading floor lamp), and accent lighting (wall sconces, table lamps).
- 2Plan for 3 to 5 light sources, placed at different heights: on the floor, at mid-height, and on the ceiling.
- 3Central light size: (room length + room width in m) × 8 = maximum diameter in cm.
- 4Light quantity: 100 to 200 lumens per m² total, in 2700K warm white, ideally with a dimmer.
- 5Adapt to the ceiling: ultra-flat ceiling light under 2.40m, generous pendant above 2.70m.
— 01The principle: lighting a living room in 3 layers
The first mistake in a living room is relying entirely on the ceiling light. A single source placed in the center flattens volumes, hardens facial features, and leaves corners in the shadows. Decorators think differently: they layer three levels of light, each with a specific role.
1. Ambient lighting: the base
This is the general light that allows you to move around and see the whole room. It almost always comes from the ceiling: a pendant, a chandelier, or a ceiling light. It should be uniform, without glare, and ideally adjustable with a dimmer to lower the intensity in the evening.
2. Task lighting: for reading and relaxing
A reading chair, the sofa corner, a side desk: these areas require stronger, more targeted light (about 300 lux). A reading or arc floor lamp is the premier solution, as it shines light over the shoulder without needing anything fixed to the ceiling.
3. Accent lighting: for atmosphere
This is the layer that makes the difference between a "lit" living room and a "lived-in" one. Wall sconces, table lamps on a console or shelf, spotlights aimed at a painting: these small sources create depth, soft shadows, and a cozy atmosphere in the evening.
— 02Which light fixture for which purpose?
Every family of light fixtures has a natural role in the living room. This table helps you compose your set without overlaps or gaps.
| Fixture | Layer | Ideal for | Avoid if... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pendant | Ambient | Creating a focal point above the coffee table or dining area | Ceiling < 2.40m in a walkway |
| Ceiling light | Ambient | Uniform lighting, low ceilings, high-traffic living areas | It's your only light source |
| Chandelier | Ambient + decor | Large living room, ceiling height ≥ 2.70m, elegant style | Small room: it overwhelms the space |
| Floor lamp | Task | Reading on the sofa, chair corner, lighting without construction | Very narrow passageway |
| Wall sconce | Accent | Creating halos on walls, framing a sofa or fireplace | Wall with no power outlet (choose a model with cord and plug) |
| Table lamp | Accent | Console, sideboard, shelf, end table: low and cozy light | — |
| Directional spots | Accent | Highlighting a painting, bookcase, or textured wall | Used as primary lighting |
— 03Pendant or ceiling light: what to put in the center?
This is the question we are asked most often. The answer depends mainly on your ceiling height and how you use the room.
- ✓Adds character and structures the space
- ✓Warmer light, often filtered by the material
- ✓Perfect above a coffee table or dining area
- ✕Requires at least 2.50m ceiling height in walkway areas
- ✓Ideal for low ceilings: never obstructs movement
- ✓Uniformly illuminates a large surface
- ✓Dimmable LED models transition from bright to dim
- ✕Less "decorative": needs to be supplemented with accent sources
Our simple rule: under 2.40m, choose a slim ceiling light (see our guide which light fixture for a low ceiling). Between 2.40 and 2.70m, a compact or adjustable pendant works very well (details in which pendant for a 2.50m ceiling). Above 2.70m, feel free to use a large pendant or chandelier.
— 04Getting the dimensions right: size, height, and power
A light fixture that is too small is the most common mistake. Three benchmarks are enough to get it right.
Example: for a 5 × 4m living room, (5 + 4) × 8 = 72 cm. A decorative pendant can approach this size; a flat, diffusing ceiling light of 50 to 60 cm will be more than enough. As for light, this 20 m² area requires 2,000 to 4,000 lumens in total, shared between the ceiling light and other sources.
| Living room area | Rec. ceiling light Ø | Total Lumens | Light points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Less than 15 m² | 35 to 45 cm | 1,500 to 3,000 lm | 3 |
| 15 to 20 m² | 45 to 55 cm | 2,000 to 4,000 lm | 3 to 4 |
| 20 to 30 m² | 55 to 70 cm | 3,000 to 6,000 lm | 4 to 5 |
| Over 30 m² | 70 cm+ or 2 points | 4,500 lm+ | 5+ |

— 05Where to place light fixtures? The triangle rule
For balanced lighting, arrange your accent sources in a triangle around the room, rather than all on one side. The eye then naturally moves from one light point to the next, and no corner remains in the dark.
-
1Center the ambient light over the living area (often the coffee table), not necessarily the geometric center of the room. An offset hook allows you to reposition a pendant.
-
2Place the floor lamp at the end of the sofa or behind the reading chair, slightly back, so the light comes over the shoulder.
-
3Balance with two accent sources on the opposite side: a lamp on a console or TV stand, a wall sconce or a pair of sconces on the barest wall.
-
4Play with heights: a low source (lamp), one at eye level (sconce at 1.60–1.80m), one high (ceiling). This provides depth.

— 07Which lighting style for your living room?
Once the functions are set, the material creates the ambiance. Maintain a consistent family of materials (two or three maximum) across your various light fixtures.
Filtered, soft light that casts shadows on the walls. Consider the KAMIA collection in paper and NATURA collection in rattan.
The "warm minimalism" trend: sculptural pieces that warm up a streamlined interior. Discover the STINARIO collection.
Mushroom shapes, stacked discs, orange or olive green hues for a joyful living room. See the SVALA collection.
For a Haussmann-style living room or reception area: chandeliers and shimmering pieces from the AURELIS collection.
— 08The right light: 2700 K, CRI, and dimmer
A beautiful light fixture equipped with a bad bulb will produce bad lighting. Three settings really matter in a living room:
- Color temperature: 2700 K (very warm white) is the gold standard for a cozy living room; 3000 K suits very bright or white-dominated living rooms. Avoid 4000 K and above. Our comparison: 2700K or 3000K for a living room?
- CRI (Color Rendering Index): aim for 90 or higher so that fabrics, wood, and skin tones retain their true colors.
- Dimmer: this is what allows you to transition from cleaning light to evening light. Check that the bulb or LED is "dimmable".
- One single temperature per room: mixing 2700 K and 4000 K creates a patchwork effect that is rarely flattering.

— 09The 6 most common mistakes
- ✕Betting everything on the ceiling light. A single source in the center flattens the room. Add at least two accent sources.
- ✕Choosing a fixture that is too small. A 30 cm ceiling light in a 25 m² living room looks lost. Use the × 8 formula.
- ✕Hanging it too low in walkways. Keep at least 2 m (ideally 2.10 m) of clearance under the fixture where people walk.
- ✕Mixing color temperatures. Stick to a single warm white shade throughout the room.
- ✕Forgetting the reading nook. Without a dedicated source, you end up turning the ceiling light on at full power.
- ✕Leaving glaring bare bulbs. Prefer diffusers (paper, opaline glass, fabric) or soft filament bulbs.

— 11Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best light fixture for a living room?+
There isn't one "best" fixture, but a good combination: a pendant or ceiling light for general ambiance, a floor lamp for reading, and one or two accent sources (wall light, table lamp). This combination makes a living room both practical and cozy.
How many light fixtures do I need in a living room?+
Count 3 light points for a small living room under 15 m², 4 for a 20 to 25 m² living room, and 5 or more for over 30 m². Spread them at different heights: floor, mid-level, and ceiling.
Pendant or ceiling light in a living room?+
With ceilings under 2.40 m, choose a slim ceiling light. Between 2.40 and 2.70 m, a compact pendant or adjustable cable light is suitable, especially over a coffee table or dining area. Above 2.70 m, a large pendant or chandelier highlights the volume.
What size light fixture for a 20 m² living room?+
For a 5 × 4 m living room, the formula (5 + 4) × 8 gives a maximum diameter of 72 cm. In practice, a 50 to 60 cm ceiling light or a 50 to 70 cm pendant light is suitable, supplemented by other sources to reach 2,000 to 4,000 lumens in total.
What light should I choose for a cozy living room?+
A very warm 2700 K white, diffusers made of natural materials (paper, fabric, rattan, travertine), and a dimmer. In the evening, favor low-level sources (table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights) and turn off the ceiling light.
Where to place a floor lamp in a living room?+
At the end of the sofa or behind an armchair, slightly set back, so the light comes over the shoulder. An arc floor lamp can also light up a coffee table without requiring a ceiling point.
