To determine how many pendants to install over an island, start with its length: 2 pendants for 120 to 150 cm, 2 large or 3 small for 150 to 200 cm, 3 for 200 to 250 cm, and 3 to 4 beyond that (or a linear light fixture). For a custom result, a simple formula works: (length − 70 cm) ÷ 75 + 1, rounded. Here is how to install them, place each pendant with centimeter precision, and adapt the calculation to your island.
The calculation relies on 5 key points.
- 1The formula: number ≈ (length − 70 cm) ÷ 75 + 1, rounded to the nearest whole number.
- 2The ends: the center of the outer pendants should be placed 30–40 cm from each end of the island.
- 3The spacing: equal intervals of 60 to 90 cm center-to-center (75 cm benchmark).
- 4The diameter: the more pendants there are, the smaller they should be, from Ø 15 to Ø 40 cm depending on the length.
- 5Installation: 75 to 90 cm above the countertop, and a single electrical outlet is sufficient with a long canopy.
— 01How many pendants over an island: the answer by length
Measure your countertop from one end to the other, then read the corresponding line. The table applies the formula and directly provides the placement of the centers to maintain regular intervals.
| Length | Calculation | Number | Recommended diameter | Center placement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120 cm | 1.67 | 2 | Ø 20–30 cm | 30 cm from ends · 60 cm center-to-center |
| 140 cm | 1.93 | 2 | Ø 20–30 cm | 35 cm from ends · 70 cm center-to-center |
| 160 cm | 2.20 | 2 | Ø 30–40 cm | 35 cm from ends · 90 cm center-to-center |
| 180 cm | 2.47 | 3 small or 2 large | 3 × Ø 15–25 or 2 × Ø 30–40 cm | For 3: 30 cm from ends · 60 cm center-to-center |
| 200 cm | 2.73 | 3 | Ø 15–25 cm | 35 cm from ends · 65 cm center-to-center |
| 220 cm | 3.00 | 3 | Ø 25–35 cm | 35 cm from ends · 75 cm center-to-center |
| 240 cm | 3.27 | 3 | Ø 25–35 cm | 35 cm from ends · 85 cm center-to-center |
| 260 cm | 3.53 | 4 (or 3) | Ø less than half the center-to-center distance | For 4: 40 cm from ends · 60 cm center-to-center |
| 280 cm | 3.80 | 4 or linear | Series, or 120–180 cm linear | 35 cm from ends · 70 cm center-to-center |
| 300 cm | 4.07 | 4 or linear | Series, or 120–180 cm linear | 30 cm from ends · 80 cm center-to-center |
Does your length fall between two lines? Choose the closest one, then verify the spacing with the method below. If you are still hesitant about the type of light fixture (series, linear, cluster) or the shape, start with our guide on which light fixture for a central island.
— 02The formula for calculating the number of pendants
The formula relies on two benchmarks: approximately 35 cm margin at each end (hence the 70 cm subtracted), followed by an ideal spacing of 75 cm between two adjacent pendants.
-
1Measure the length of the countertop, including overhangs. Example: 240 cm.
-
2Apply the formula: (240 − 70) ÷ 75 + 1 = 3.27. Rounded: 3 pendants.
-
3Calculate the actual center-to-center distance: (length − 70) ÷ (number − 1) = 170 ÷ 2 = 85 cm center-to-center.
-
4Verify the range: the center-to-center distance should fall between 60 and 90 cm. Otherwise, adjust the margins between 30 and 40 cm, or change the number of pendants.
— 03Where to place each pendant: spacing guide
The number alone is not enough: it is the regularity of the placement that gives a harmonious island. The method is done in two stages, always measuring from center to center, i.e., from the center of one pendant to the center of the next.
-
1Place the two outer pendants: their centers 30–40 cm from each end of the island. Closer to the edge, the light falls outside the countertop; further away, the ends remain dark.
-
2Distribute the others at equal intervals between these two points, with 60 to 90 cm center-to-center.
-
3Center across the width: all pendants align on the island's longitudinal axis, not the room's or an existing light outlet.
The visual safeguard: the clear space between two adjacent pendants must remain at least equal to their diameter. In other words, the diameter should not exceed half the center-to-center distance: Ø 30 cm maximum for 60 cm center-to-center, Ø 40 cm maximum for 80 cm.
— 042 or 3 pendants over an island: odd or even?
Between 150 and 200 cm, the question really arises. Both configurations work, but they do not produce the same effect.
- ✓Ideal for about 120 to 170 cm
- ✓Allows for more prominent models (Ø 30–40 cm)
- ✓Only two points to connect
- ✕On a long island, the central gap can feel empty
- ✓A central point that catches the eye
- ✓Regular light from 180 to 250 cm
- ✓Small, light models, elegant "necklace" effect
- ✕Too crowded under 180 cm: the gap drops below 60 cm
The case of 180–200 cm. The formula yields 2.47 to 2.73: this is the pivot zone. With 3 small pendants (Ø 15–25 cm), you get a center-to-center distance of 60 to 65 cm, within the range. With 2 large ones (Ø 30–40 cm), their centers remain 30–40 cm from the ends: the gap between them then exceeds 90 cm, and it is precisely their generous diameter that maintains a continuous pool of light. Beyond 250 cm, the choice is between 4 pendants and a 120 to 180 cm linear light fixture.
— 05What diameter according to the number of pendants?
The number and diameter should be decided together: the more pendants there are, the smaller they must be to avoid visually cluttering the island.
- 2 pendants: Ø 20–30 cm on a 120 to 150 cm island, Ø 30–40 cm between 150 and 200 cm.
- 3 pendants: Ø 15–25 cm between 150 and 200 cm, Ø 25–35 cm between 200 and 250 cm.
- 4 pendants: compact models, where the diameter stays under half the center-to-center distance.
- Linear light fixture: 120 to 180 cm long for an island over 250 cm.
Visual weight also counts: an opaque metal or travertine pendant appears more imposing than clear glass of the same diameter. When in doubt, stay on the lower end of the range for an opaque model. Does your island also serve as a dining table? Correspondence by table size is detailed in our guide on which pendant diameter for a 120, 140, 160, or 180 cm table.
— 06Island with cooktop or hood: how to calculate
When the island contains the cooktop, do not hang anything above it: heat, steam, and splashes can damage the fixtures, and an island hood already occupies the space. The calculation is then based on the usable length, i.e., the part of the island used for preparation or dining.
- Cooktop at one end: measure the free zone (up to the edge of the cooktop), then apply the formula to this length, as in the diagram.
- Cooktop in the center, with island hood: the hood becomes the central point. Place one pendant (or two small ones) on each side, over the prep and dining areas, using the same finish material as the hood for unity.
- Cooktop with integrated extraction: without a hood at the ceiling, you can distribute the pendants over the entire length, simply avoiding the area directly above the cooktop.
— 07A single electrical outlet: the long canopy
In most kitchens, there is only one light outlet above the island, rarely placed exactly in the right spot. However, there is no need to create three outlets in the ceiling: a long fixing canopy (or multiple rose) connects to the single outlet and distributes power to 2, 3, or 4 cables at the desired spacing.
Two other solutions avoid any ceiling work: a light fixture already designed for a single point, like the Doréa triple pendant and its 3 woven bamboo shades, or a linear fixture like the Sylvara branch chandelier, 100 to 160 cm long. In any case, leave the connection to an electrician if you are not comfortable doing it.
— 08And the height? 75 to 90 cm above the countertop
Once the number and spacing are set, adjust all pendants to the same height: 75 to 90 cm between the countertop and the bottom of the fixture, with an ideal benchmark around 80 cm. For a 90 cm high countertop, the bottom of the pendants should be between 1.65 and 1.80 m from the floor. If you mix several shapes (like the 3 models of Vitréa), align their bottoms rather than their tops. All measurement details are in our guide on what height for a pendant above a table, which compares tables, islands, and bedside tables.

— 10Most frequent calculation mistakes
- ✕Centering on the room or the light outlet. Pendants should be aligned with the island's axis; the mounting plate compensates for any offset.
- ✕Placing the outermost ones at the very edge. Less than 30 cm from the edge, some light will spill onto the floor.
- ✕Uneven intervals. The eye immediately spots a deviation of a few centimeters: measure from center to center.
- ✕Too many large pendants. If the free space between them becomes smaller than their diameter, the island looks cluttered.
- ✕Suspending over the cooktop. Calculate based on the useful length and leave the cooking area clear.
— 11Frequently asked questions
How many pendants above a 2-meter island?+
For a 200 cm island, the formula yields (200 − 70) ÷ 75 + 1 = 2.73, so 3 pendants. Choose models 15 to 25 cm in diameter, centered 35 cm from the ends and spaced 65 cm center-to-center.
What spacing between pendants above an island?+
Place the centers of the outermost pendants 30–40 cm from each end of the island, then distribute the others at equal intervals of 60 to 90 cm center-to-center, with 75 cm being the ideal benchmark.
2 or 3 pendants above an island?+
2 pendants are suitable for lengths from approximately 120 to 170 cm, in diameters of 20 to 40 cm depending on the length. Beyond that, 3 pendants provide a more balanced rhythm and more even lighting. Between 180 and 200 cm, both work: 3 small or 2 large.
Can you put 2 pendants on a 200 cm island?+
Yes, provided you choose wide models, Ø 30 to 40 cm, centered 30–40 cm from the ends. The gap between them will exceed 90 cm, but their generous diameter maintains continuous light over the surface.
How to connect 3 pendants with a single light outlet?+
Use a long mounting plate (or multiple canopy) connected to the single light supply: it distributes current to the 3 cables at the desired spacing. Another option: a triple or linear fixture designed from the start for a single outlet.
At what height should pendants be placed above an island?+
The bottom of the pendants should be 75–90 cm above the work surface, ideally around 80 cm. With a countertop at 90 cm from the floor, this represents 1.65 to 1.80 m. Adjust all pendants in a series to the same height.
