The right bedroom wall light depends first on its role: an adjustable reading light 1.20–1.40 m from the floor for reading in bed, an indirect or up-and-down light at 1.60–1.80 m for ambiance, and a very soft source for getting up at night. This selector helps you find the right model based on use, location, light type, and room type.
Choose a bedroom wall light in 5 quick steps.
- 1For reading: direct and adjustable light, 1.20–1.40 m from the floor, 400 to 800 lumens, built-in switch.
- 2For ambiance: indirect or up-and-down light, 1.60–1.80 m high, above eye level to avoid glare.
- 3Four key locations: headboard, mirror or vanity, dressing room, accent wall.
- 4The light: 2700 to 3000 K, adjustable intensity, a single shade of white in the room.
- 5By room type: a pair of reading lights for the parents, an out-of-reach model for children, built-in switches for guests.
— 01Which wall light for a bedroom? The selector
Start with your need, not the catalog. A single bedroom can accommodate two or three different wall lights, each with its own mission. Find the row that matches your use: it will give you the light type, installation height, and suitable models.
| Your need | Light type | Height | Look for | Our models |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading in bed | Direct, adjustable | 1.20–1.40 m | 400–800 lm, built-in switch, depth ≤ 20 cm | Orientéil, Potencéil |
| Ambiance by the headboard | Up & down or diffused | 1.20–1.40 m | Soft light, model in a pair | Scandéil, Haléil, Travéil |
| Getting up at night | Indirect, very soft | Near the bed or door | Hidden source, adjustable intensity | Eclipséil |
| Mirror or vanity | Diffused, on both sides | At face height | Shadow-free light, opal or frosted glass | Globéil, Néveil |
| Dressing room | Direct or up & down | 1.60–1.80 m | Low projection (≤ 10–12 cm if walkway is less than 1 m) | Auréclipse |
| Accent wall | Indirect or up & down | 1.60–1.80 m | Graphic halo on the wall | Disquéil, Siléil |
This selector complements our guide Master bedroom wall lights: how to choose correctly, which details criteria for material, finish, and power. Here, we reason by use, location, and room type.
— 02Reading, creating ambiance, getting up at night: choosing by use
Three uses, three very different wall lights. First, remember these three numbers.
1. For reading: the adjustable reading light
This is the most technical light in the bedroom. It must illuminate your book without waking your partner: an adjustable head or shade that directs light downward, 400 to 800 lumens, and an easily accessible switch. The Orientéil wall light, in wood and metal with an adjustable shade, is available in 6 colors; the Potencéil and its small shade suspended from a golden bracket offer a more polished look. Exact height, spacing, and bed width are detailed in our guide Headboard wall light: height, spacing, and models.
2. For ambiance: light that dresses the wall
Here, we are not looking to illuminate a task but to create depth. An up-and-down light draws two beams on the wall; an indirect light sends light toward the ceiling and softens the whole room. Mounted at 1.60–1.80 m, above eye level, it will never glare, even while lying down. Siléil (fluted resin, up and down) and Disquéil (indirect light disc, Ø 30 or 40 cm) are two good examples.
3. For the night: the invisible source
Getting up without turning on the ceiling light is the comfort you notice most. Choose a wall light where the source remains hidden, like the halo disc Eclipséil, and set it to the lowest level with a dimmer and dimmable LED. Place it near the bed or along the path to the door.
— 03Direct, indirect, up and down: which light for which effect?
The shape of the wall light determines the direction of its light, and thus the atmosphere it creates. Four families occupy the bedroom.
- Direct: the only one truly suitable for reading. Adjustable shade, pivoting head, or wall bracket: Orientéil, Travéil (travertine and wood, downward light).
- Indirect: the most soothing, ideal for evenings and under low ceilings, which it raises visually. Disquéil shines upward.
- Up and down: graphic and versatile, perfect as a pair on either side of the bed. Scandéil is available with a built-in switch.
- Diffused: an opal or frosted globe that lights all around, very soft for a mirror. Globéil combines a frosted globe with up-and-down light.
— 04Where to place a wall light in a bedroom?
Four locations appear in almost all bedrooms. Each has its own height and type of wall light.
- ① On the headboard: one wall light on each side, at 1.20–1.40 m from the floor (60–80 cm above the mattress), aligned with the bedside table, approximately 10 to 20 cm beyond the edge of the bed. Maximum depth of 20 cm so you don't hit your head when sitting up.
- ② Around a mirror or vanity: two wall lights on either side, at face height, rather than one above that casts shadows under the eyes. Prefer a diffused light: frosted globe from Globéil or Néveil (Ø 18 cm). For a large mirror, a bar light like Barréil can also be placed above.
- ③ Above a reading chair: a direct wall light, placed to shine over your shoulder. An adjustable head allows you to tune the beam.
- ④ On an accent wall: facing the bed or around a dresser, a pair of indirect or up-and-down lights at 1.60–1.80 m turns a bare wall into decor.
- In a dressing room: a low-profile wall light above doors or opposite closet space. In walkways less than 1 m, limit projection to 10–12 cm: Auréclipse is only 9.5 cm deep.
— 05Master bedroom, child's room, or guest room: the right approach
A guest room does not have the same needs as a master suite or a child's room. Here is what changes.
- ✓An adjustable reading light on each side, with its own switch
- ✓An indirect ambient source on another wall
- ✓Matching models for headboard symmetry
- ✓Built-in switch: your guests don't have to hunt
- ✓Up and down, versatile: reading and ambiance in one model
- ✓No electrical wall connection: a model with cable and plug
— 06Which style of wall light for your bedroom?
The bedroom is the room where you can be most daring: light is seen up close, and so is material. Keep the same family of finishes for wall lights, lamps, and ceiling lights.
Solid wood from Kiréil (integrated LED, 35 or 45 cm) or the wood and metal duo of Orientéil for a soft and warm room.
Travéil and the travertine effect of Luminosa bring a calm and sculptural presence. The entire range: travertine wall lights.
The Haléil half-moon, the frosted globe of Globéil in 4 soft shades, and the SVALA collection.
— 072700 K and adjustable intensity: the right light
- Temperature: 2700 K for a cozy bedroom, 3000 K at most for a slightly sharper reading light. Keep the same hue for all light sources in the room. Our comparison 2700K or 3000K, written for the living room, applies to the bedroom as well.
- Power: 400 to 800 lumens for a reading light; much less for an ambient sconce, which should remain a soft glow.
- Dimmer: it turns a single sconce into a reading lamp, then a nightlight. Check that the bulb or LED is dimmable.
- Integrated LED or bulb? Integrated LEDs allow for slimmer sconces; replaceable bulbs let you choose the hue and power. The complete breakdown: Integrated LED or replaceable bulb.
Light that is too white, a single ceiling source, bare bulbs: these traps can chill a bedroom in an instant. We detail them in 5 lighting mistakes that make a bedroom feel cold.

— 095 errors to avoid
- ✕Ambient sconce at eye level. Below 1.60 m, away from the headboard, it glares as soon as you pass by.
- ✕Reading light too high. Above 1.40 m, the light falls behind your head instead of illuminating the book.
- ✕Fixed sconce for reading together. Without an adjustable head, the light spills over to your partner.
- ✕Sconce too deep for a headboard. More than 20 cm, and you’ll hit your head when sitting up.
- ✕Mixing shades of white. A cool reading light next to a warm ambiance ruins the atmosphere.
— 10Frequently asked questions
Which wall sconce to choose for a bedroom?+
For reading, a bedroom wall sconce with direct light and an adjustable head, placed 1.20–1.40 m from the floor. For ambiance, an indirect or up-and-down sconce at 1.60–1.80 m. Both complement each other very well in the same room.
At what height should a wall sconce be placed in a bedroom?+
At the headboard, 1.20–1.40 m from the floor, or about 60 to 80 cm above the mattress. Elsewhere in the room, an ambient sconce should be placed at 1.60–1.80 m, above eye level to avoid glare.
Which light should I choose for a bedroom sconce?+
A warm white of 2700 K, or 3000 K at most for a reading light. Count on 400 to 800 lumens for reading, and add a dimmer to turn the same sconce into a nightlight in the evening.
Direct or indirect light in a bedroom?+
Direct light is for reading, indirect light for creating a soothing atmosphere. Up-and-down sconces do a bit of both and are very suitable for headboards, especially in a guest bedroom.
Which sconce for a child's bedroom?+
An integrated LED sconce, with no accessible bulb, placed at 1.60–1.80 m to keep it out of reach. Choose adjustable intensity for bedtime stories and a cheerful color that adds to the decor.
Can you install a sconce without a wall outlet?+
Yes, with a model featuring a cable and plug: it connects to the nearest outlet. Run the cable through a cord cover painted the same color as the wall for a clean finish.
