In a living room, choose an indirect or up-and-down light wall sconce for ambiance and an adjustable wall sconce for reading. Mount it at 1.60–1.80 m from the floor, above eye level, often in pairs on either side of the sofa, television, or fireplace, with a 10 to 15 cm projection near a walkway and a 2700 K light.
5 tips for choosing a living room wall sconce.
- 1Its role: to dress the walls and create depth. It complements the ceiling light or floor lamp; it does not replace them on its own.
- 2The height: 1.60–1.80 m from the floor, above the eyes of a standing person. Exception: 1.20–1.40 m for a reading light above an armchair.
- 3The number: a symmetrical pair to frame an element, or one sconce every 1.50 to 2.50 m along a large wall.
- 4The light: indirect or up-and-down for ambiance, adjustable for reading, 2700 K for the evening.
- 5The connection: to an existing wall outlet, or to a socket with an exposed-cable model if the wall is not equipped.
— 01Which wall sconce for a living room? The selector
A living room wall sconce is chosen first according to the wall it will dress and the desired effect. Find your situation: the line gives you the type of light, the height, and the suitable models.
| Your wall | Desired effect | Light | Height | Our models |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall behind the sofa | Frame the seating area, evening ambiance | Up-and-down or indirect | 1.60–1.80 m | Siléil, Eclipséil |
| TV wall | Soften the screen contrast | Indirect or diffuse, low intensity | Top of the screen or above | Ombreil, Rondéil |
| Fireplace | Symmetry, elegance | Diffuse or up-and-down | Above the mantel, 1.60–1.80 m | Élyane, Auréil |
| Mirror, painting, console | Highlight an object | Up-and-down, diffuse | Middle of the object or slightly above | Luminosa, Auréclipse |
| Reading nook | Read without a floor lamp | Direct, downward or adjustable | 1.20–1.40 m (above the shoulder) | Orientéil, Pendéil |
| Bare wall, no electrical outlet | Luminous decor, little work | Downward, diffuse | 1.60–1.80 m | Voiléil (exposed cable) |

— 02What is a wall sconce used for in a living room?
The ceiling light illuminates the floor and coffee table; the wall sconce illuminates the walls. And it is the light on the walls that gives a room its depth and atmosphere. A living room wall sconce fulfills one of these three roles:
- Ambiance: a soft glow, often indirect, that replaces the ceiling light in the evening. This is the main role in a living room.
- Accent: a halo that highlights a painting, fireplace, bookcase, or the texture of a lime-washed wall.
- Reading: an adjustable wall sconce above an armchair, which frees the floor from a floor lamp.
A diffuse ambiance wall sconce often emits a few hundred lumens (300 to 500 lm for Siléil): it complements the general light without replacing it. In a 20 m² living room, which requires 2,000 to 4,000 lumens in total, two wall sconces provide a layer of ambiance, not the main lighting. The complete calculation is detailed in how many lumens for a living room.
The Ombreil wall sconce above a buffet: a discreet disk by day, a halo on the wall in the evening. It adds a layer of ambiance without replacing the general light.— 03At what height should a living room wall sconce be mounted?
The general rule is simple: 1.60 to 1.80 m from the floor, measured at the center of the sconce. At this height, the source remains above the eye level of a standing person and does not dazzle seated people.
Three exceptions to know:
- High ceiling (2.80 m and more): mount at around 1.80–1.90 m to maintain proportions, especially with an indirect wall sconce that illuminates the ceiling.
- Low ceiling (less than 2.40 m): stay at 1.60–1.70 m and prefer indirect light, which visually raises the ceiling. More solutions in what lighting for a low ceiling.
- Above a piece of furniture (console, buffet, fireplace): leave 30 to 50 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the sconce, or align it with the center of the object placed on top.
— 04How many wall sconces and what spacing?
The right number depends on the length of the wall and what you are framing. Three cases cover almost all living rooms.
| Situation | Number | Spacing |
|---|---|---|
| Frame a sofa, TV, fireplace, mirror | 2 (pair) | 10–20 cm from each edge of the element, equidistant from its axis |
| Large bare wall or bookcase wall | 1 every 1.50 to 2.50 m | Regular, starting 50–80 cm from the corners |
| Small living room (less than 15 m²) | 1 to 2 | On the wall opposite the main light source |
| Living room of 20 to 30 m² | 2 to 4 | A pair on the main wall, one or two as accents elsewhere |
Two wall sconces per wall are sufficient in the vast majority of cases. Beyond that, the "hotel hallway" effect looms. If you equip several walls, keep the same model or the same family of finish so that the whole remains readable.
— 05Where to place a wall sconce in a living room?
Six locations recur in almost all living rooms. For each, the placement rule changes slightly.
On either side of the sofa
The most common location. Place one wall sconce on each side, 10 to 20 cm beyond the armrests, at 1.60–1.80 m. An up-and-down light, like the ribbed resin of Siléil, draws two lines on the wall and frames the seating area. In the evening, with the ceiling light off, they are enough for a conversation ambiance.
Two terracotta Siléil wall sconces, mounted at the same height: the up-and-down light traces two regular lines on the living room wall.Around the television
Watching a screen in the dark quickly tires the eyes: a soft light around the TV reduces the contrast. Place one wall sconce on each side of the TV stand, out of the screen's field of view to avoid reflections, with indirect light and low intensity. The Rondéil, in frosted glass, is dimmable; the halo disk of Eclipséil (Ø 20 or 25 cm) hides its source.
On either side of a fireplace
A symmetrical pair, above the mantel, at the height of the center of the mirror or painting placed on top. The glass globes lend themselves well to the exercise: the white glass ball of Élyane, or the opaline ball on a gold-plated base of Auréil.
Around a mirror or a painting
Mount the wall sconces 10 to 15 cm from the edges of the frame, centered on the middle of the object or slightly above. Above a console or buffet, a single off-center wall sconce also works well, like the travertine block of Luminosa above an oak buffet.
The Luminosa wall sconce in travertine (16 × 8 × 8 cm) above a buffet: a single source is enough to highlight the furniture and the lime-washed wall.Above a reading armchair
Here, we change the rule: the wall sconce is lowered to 1.20–1.40 m and must be adjustable. The shade of Orientéil turns towards the book then towards the wall at the end of the evening. For a softer light that accompanies the armchair without aiming at the page, the glass ball of Perléil, on a gold arm, works very well.
Living room corner with the Perléil wall sconce: gold arm, amber glass ball and black looped cable that is part of the design. Its soft light accompanies an armchair without dazzling.Bookcase and bare wall
On a bookcase, an up-and-down wall sconce placed between two uprights, or above the furniture, illuminates the shelves without dazzling. On a large bare wall, a sculptural wall sconce serves as decor: the pleated silk of Voiléil (four shapes, up to 44 cm in diameter) or the bird on a luminous branch of Aviéil (50 cm high).
— 06Indirect, up-and-down, adjustable: which light?
The shape of the wall sconce determines the direction of its light, and therefore the ambiance of the living room.

- ✓Visually lifts a low ceiling
- ✕Doesn't provide enough light for reading
Disquéil, Eclipséil, Ombreil.
- ✓Graphic, perfect in pairs
- ✓Makes the wall appear taller
- ✕Sensitive to wall imperfections, which are very visible in grazing light
- ✓Warm, also lights up the room
- ✓Beautiful around a fireplace or a mirror
- ✕Choose opal or frosted glass to avoid glare
Élyane, Auréil, Globéil, Voiléil.
- ✓The only one truly designed for reading
- ✓Can be turned toward the wall for ambiance
- ✕Mounted lower, so more exposed to bumps
Orientéil; Potencéil for direct light downward.
When it comes to color temperature, stick with warm white: 2700 K for evening ambiance, 3000 K at most. Several of our models are listed in warm white (Siléil at 3000 K, Scandéil at 2700–3500 K); for those delivered without a bulb (Élyane, Fuméil, Angléil, Potencéil), choose a 2700 K LED. Keep the same color temperature as the ceiling light and lamps. Our 2700K or 3000K comparison helps you choose.
— 07Hardwired or plug-in wall light, surface-mounted: technical points
Existing wall outlet: the simplest case
Most wall lights connect to a wall cable outlet (a recessed box with phase, neutral, and ground), controlled by a switch. Always turn off the circuit breaker before working. The Degréil, for example, connects directly to the electrical network. If the wall is not equipped, creating an outlet requires cutting into the wall or installing a conduit: it's a job for an electrician.
No electrical supply: the exposed-cable wall light
Some wall lights are designed to be plugged into an outlet, with their cable running down the wall. In our range, the visuals of Voiléil show an exposed cable running down to the floor, incorporated as a decorative element. Our product sheets do not always specify if a plug is included: check this point with our customer service before ordering if you do not have a wall outlet. Then run the cable vertically to the outlet, flush with the wall light, or in a thin conduit painted the same color as the wall.
The saucer-shaped Voiléil wall light: its thin arm and vertical cable, visible down to the floor, make it a decorative element in its own right on a bare wall.Projection: how far the wall light extends from the wall
Along a walkway, limit the projection to 10–15 cm to avoid bumping your shoulder into it. Behind a sofa or above a piece of furniture, where no one brushes against the wall, the projection matters less. Examples in our range: Linéil only protrudes by 5 cm, Siléil by 8 cm, Auréclipse by 9.5 cm, Globéa by 11 cm; Néveil protrudes by 20 cm and Angléil by 17 cm, to be reserved for walls away from walkways.
Integrated LED or bulb?
The integrated LED allows for very thin, maintenance-free wall lights (Barréil, Kiréil, Rondéil, Haléil); the replaceable bulb lets you choose the color temperature and power (E27 for Orientéil, Élyane, Globéil; G9 for Siléil, Néveil, Pastilléil). The complete match: Integrated LED or replaceable bulb.
— 08Travertine, wood, glass, brass: what style?
The wall light is seen up close and even when turned off: its material matters as much as its light. Match it to the living room furniture.
The block of Luminosa, the crescent of Minéil, the stone and wood of Travéil. The entire range: travertine wall lights.
The solid wood bar of Kiréil, the wicker of Dorévia, the woven rattan of Cannéa.
The smoked glass of Auréclipse, the ribbed globe of Fuméil, the frosted glass of Rondéil and Globéil.
The gold disc of Ombreil, the opaline sphere of Auréil, the gold arm of Perléil, the tube of Tubéil.

— 10The 6 mistakes to avoid
- ✕An ambiance wall light at eye level. Below 1.60 m, the light source dazzles as soon as you stand up.
- ✕Relying on two wall lights to light up the entire living room. They create the ambiance; the general light comes from elsewhere.
- ✕A poorly centered pair. Measure from the center of the sofa or fireplace, not from the corner of the wall.
- ✕A deep wall light along a walkway. Beyond 15 cm of projection, you bump your shoulder into it.
- ✕A wall light facing the screen. It reflects in the TV; place it on the sides.
- ✕Mixing white color temperatures. A cool wall light next to a warm floor lamp breaks the ambiance.
