How to choose ceiling spotlights

Spotlights provide targeted light: a worktop, a painting, a hallway or a whole living room with several light points. A few guidelines to choose between recessed and surface-mounted spotlights and place them well. To avoid the classic mistakes, also read how to light a living room.

Recessed or surface-mounted spotlight?

A recessed spotlight fits into a false ceiling: it almost disappears and gives a very clean look, but it needs a hollow ceiling and a cut-out. A surface-mounted spotlight fixes directly to the ceiling, even concrete, with no false ceiling. It then becomes a decorative feature: tube, cylinder, wood and coloured metal.

How many spotlights do I need?

In a living room, allow about one spotlight per 1.5 to 2 m². Space them 1 to 1.5 m apart and keep 50 to 60 cm between the spotlights and the walls. In a kitchen, place them above the worktop rather than in the middle of the room, so you don't work in your own shadow.

Why choose an adjustable spotlight?

An adjustable spotlight directs light exactly where you need it: a painting, a bookcase, a worktop. Multi-head or bar models light several areas from a single light point, handy when there is only one cable outlet in the ceiling.

Which light temperature for spotlights?

Choose 2700 to 3000 K in a living room or bedroom for a warm light, and 4000 K in a kitchen, bathroom or home office for a crisper light. A dimmable model lets you adjust the intensity to the moment.

Spotlights or ceiling light?

A ceiling light gives general light from a single point. Spotlights spread the light and avoid shadowy areas, which is ideal in a long room, a kitchen or a hallway. If you prefer a single light point, discover our ceiling lights.
