How to choose a ceiling light

A ceiling light lights the whole room from above without taking up headroom: ideal for a bedroom, a hallway or a room with a low ceiling. A few guidelines to choose the right size and the right light. To go further, our guide to layered lighting explains how to complete it with lamps and wall lights.

Ceiling light or pendant: which to choose?

A ceiling light sits flush against the ceiling. It suits low ceilings (under 2.50 m), hallways and bedrooms, and never gets in the way. A pendant hangs lower and creates a focal point above a table or an island. In a living area, you can combine a ceiling light for general lighting with a pendant light above the table.

What size ceiling light for my room?

For a room of 10 to 12 m², a ceiling light 30 to 40 cm in diameter is enough. From 15 to 20 m², go for 40 to 60 cm. Beyond that, choose a large model or several light points to avoid dark corners.

How bright should it be?

Allow about 100 to 150 lumens per m² for a living room or bedroom, and 250 to 300 lumens per m² for a kitchen or bathroom. A dimmable ceiling light lets you switch from bright light to a softer mood. Wattage and colour temperature are listed on each product page.

Which ceiling light style to choose?

Ultra-slim LED ceiling lights stay discreet and blend into any interior. For more character, natural wood warms up a bedroom, stone and travertine bring a mineral look (STINARIO collection) and rattan filters a soft light (NATURA collection). Coloured or geometric models brighten up a home office or a child's bedroom.

Is a ceiling fan with light worth it?

An LED ceiling fan combines lighting and air circulation: handy in summer in a bedroom or living room. It fits on the same ceiling outlet as a ceiling light, with no extra socket. Allow at least 2.30 m between the floor and the blades. For more tips, read how to cool your home without air conditioning.
